Dr. Jimmie Lee Marler, a retired educator, is a prolific artist working in pastels, watercolors and more
HARVILLE, MO, November 10, 2023 — Jimmie Lee Marler has been inducted into Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Marler is distinguished for a long and fruitful career as a professional artist. Since 1973, he has sold his works through his business, Marler’s Photo & Art LLC, while also enjoying a highly successful career as a computer scientist and educator. Now mostly retired from teaching, he remains a versatile artist with a diverse range of skills, having honed his craft in multiple media, including pastels, watercolor, pencil and oil paint. Dr. Marler is so prolific that he has amassed an impressive collection of nearly 15,000 pictures, of which he has donated 2,000 to charities.
Dr. Marler’s passion for the arts began at the young age of 12, when his cousin, a professional artist and paraplegic named Johnny Jackson, taught him and his brother to draw. Soon after, Dr. Marler began drawing and selling portraits as a hobby; he found that drawing kept his mind occupied, and he found joy in exploring new techniques and styles to improve his craft. Among his many artistic achievements, Dr. Marler is especially proud of being featured in “Art from Leonardo da Vinci Today,” a book featuring the work of 241 artists from all over the world. Dr. Marler’s extensive knowledge of art and history, which he has imparted to many students over the years, played a significant role in his selection.
The arts have been a balm throughout some of the more difficult parts of Dr. Marler’s life, including the illness and passing of his wife of 49 years. His wife loved and encouraged his art, especially his pencil drawings; when she was in pain during her illness, Dr. Marler enjoyed sitting by her side and letting his creativity flow onto paper.
As an educator, Dr. Marler spent a significant part of his career teaching mathematics and computer science at Southwest Baptist University and Drury University. Later, he expanded his teaching repertoire by offering up to 24 classes in subjects such as photography, computer programming, and web design. Dr. Marler’s teaching skills were highly regarded and appreciated by his students, who benefited from his vast knowledge and expertise in multiple disciplines. In fact, his teaching excellence was recognized with several awards, including a 1996 Tandy Technology Scholars Outstanding Teacher Award, a People’s Choice Award, and a place in the Dunklin County Library Hall of Fame.
Dr. Marler holds a PhD in computers from Columbia Pacific University and a master’s degree from Columbia University. He also holds degrees from Drury University, the College of the Ozarks, and Southwestern College in Oklahoma City.
Jimmie has been accepted to enter two pieces of art in the PAKS museums in Vienna, Austria, Castle Heidenreichstein in lower Austria and in Munich, Germany. Also, he will be entering the Modern Art Masters in Complex du Lourve Carrousel du Louvre, in Paris, France. The two paintings will be in Europe from July 2022 thru Dec 2024.
